On Saturday, May 3, there will be an open day at the organ in Fríkirkjan, where compositions for a computer-controlled pipe organ will be performed, the hyperorgan will be discussed, and everyone interested will be invited to submit a short composition that will be played by the computerized hyperorgan.

The term hyperorgan describes the phenomenon when a pipe organ is controlled by a computer, thus creating a new instrument, with new possibilities for performance and composition. In recent years, various composers have developed a new type of organ music, and it can be said that the church organ has undergone a renewal of life with the advent of computer technology.

The schedule starts with a sound installation by Einar Torfi Einarsson for the hyperorgan. Visitors are free to wander around and experience the work at their own pace.

Those who would like to have their music played by the organ in Fríkirkjan are encouraged to submit a short MIDI file to YWtpIHwgYWtpICEgaXM= by April 29. The music must be less than 2 minutes long. Instructions are available at https://aki.is/MIDI-juke-box.html

Discussions about the hyperorgan will be in English, but in addition to Gunnar Gunnarsson, organist, and Áki Ásgeirsson, composer, organ composers Marion Wörle and Maciej Śledziecki will present the latest technology and ideas of the organ project Gamut. https://gamutinc.org/organ-works/

The program ends with a concert of brand new works for the Fríkirkjan Organ, where dimensions of the hyperorgan are explored with new software customized for the occasion. The organ in Fríkirkjan is the oldest pipe organ in the country that is still in use and will be 100 years old next year. It can therefore be said that the hyperorgan is a fusion of youth and old age, traditions and ideas.
