ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Sport

Dr. Allan Johnston will deliver an open lecture titled ADHD Assessment and Treatment in Sport, where he will present current data on ADHD prevalence in UK sport and outline the UKAD (UK Anti-Doping) governance processes related to assessment and treatment.
The lecture will explore the three core symptoms of ADHD — inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity — illustrated through real case examples from work with athletes.
Dr. Johnston will also discuss the NICE Guideline NG87, offering clear recommendations on ADHD treatment, and present a bio-psycho-social approach that includes both medication and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The lecture will raise important questions around evidence-based practice versus practice-based evidence in sport psychology and mental health care.
