About the event

Defeating Uncrewed Systems - Foundation
You will gain a foundation understanding of common methods of employment, system architectures & vulnerabilities of uncrewed systems.

About this Event

Area of Interest: Capability Systems, Defence Industry, Systems Engineering, Government, Security

Course Summary

The war in Ukraine has confirmed the devastating effect that low-cost uncrewed systems will have on the modern battlefield. This course will facilitate a foundation understanding of common methods of employment, system architectures and vulnerabilities of uncrewed systems. A range of technologies will be presented to promote a system-of-systems mindset in considering how varying uncrewed systems could be defeated.

By completing this course, learners will be able to:
  • Identify the types of sub-systems which can defeat uncrewed systems
  • Define the threat posed by land, air and maritime uncrewed systems
  • Explain how a system-of-systems approach is required to defeat uncrewed systems

No prior knowledge is assumed.

Duration: 1 Day

Delivery Mode: Hybrid: On-campus and remote - you choose how you would like to attend.

Course Content

This course is broken into the following core learning topics:

  • Common threat scenarios for air, land and maritime uncrewed systems based on international scenarios
  • Breakdown of the common uncrewed systems functional and physical architectures to understand which vulnerabilities to target
  • Introducing a basic engagement cycle for defeating uncrewed systems, to discuss and understand the functional requirements of a system used to defeat uncrewed technologies
  • Working through the engagement cycle, various technologies that can be employed to defeat uncrewed systems with a focus on exemplars from within Australian Industry
  • Challenges for integrating defence against uncrewed systems into existing capabilities

Who should attend

The nature of uncrewed systems means this course is not only applicable to Defence Professionals, but also security specialists seeking to protect major events or infrastructure. This one-day course will benefit people who are involved in defining new capabilities which may be vulnerable to uncrewed systems, teams evaluating counter uncrewed systems technologies or specialists providing intelligence assessments of uncrewed system threats. The foundation level course is particularly suited to those seeking a high-level overview of the challenges and to network with others with a common professional interest, who may not come from an engineering background.

What will you receive
  • UNSW Canberra certificate of completion/attendance
  • Masters credit: UNSW Canberra allows students who have successfully completed a minimum of 12 days of approved professional education courses to use those courses as credit in eligible postgraduate programs.
