Tai Chi Chuan is part of the Kung Fu family, however its dissemination in North America has largely focused on its wellness aspects. Consequently, many schools have chosen to drop the martial aspects of the style, and their teachers do not know or learn how to use the movements in the forms for martial purposes preferring to focus on Tai Chi forms as a Qigong practice. It is one of our school’s mandates to demystify the martial aspect of Tai Chi Chuan and present to any interested enthusiasts the reality of Tai Chi Chuan’s history.
It is our school’s perspective that the martial applications of the system enhance the wellness and Qigong aspects. Whether or not you become a great fighter, knowledge of the martial applications for the forms gives you insight into their purpose and how to better manage important Qigong criteria like body alignment, energy flow and meditative mind.
While our school has offered “Self-defence” courses in the past, those classes were more about developing safety awareness on the street and then practicing straightforward self-defence techniques common to many systems.
In contrast, this short workshop will include the following:
• Introducing the foundations of Tai Chi Chuan as a martial art proper in its own right exploring the combat techniques for “Grasp Birds Tail”, “Deflect, Parry and Punch” and “Blocking Punch” .
• For those familiar with the eight forces used in Tai Chi Chuan, this means we will go over Peng (Ward off), Lu (Roll back), Ji (Press), and An (Push), otherwise known as the primary forces
• We will also have a look at the mentioned punching techniques that incorporate these forces.
• Basics of push hands.
• Basics of falling
While it takes much longer to develop the famous soft hand that Tai Chi is known for as an exemplary internal martial art, we will attempt to give some experience in how to apply it and the training methods used to cultivate it.
Thanks for considering. Please let me know if you have any questions.
