MOBILITY SCOOTERS: Assessment, Trials, Selection & Solutions - Adelaide AM

Mobility Scooters offer an invaluable mobility option for clients who are able to use these devices safely. They enable a person to remain connected to their community and continue with their usual occupations, improving independence and quality of life.

Occupational therapists are often considered the experts in mobility scooter assessment, tasked with assessing capacity of potential or current scooter users, and completing applications or reviews for funding bodies.

For AHPs new to mobility scooter prescription, understanding the domains of assessment, clinical benefits, and considerations will assist therapists in supporting their clients’ mobility goals. Aidacare invites you to explore the clinical pathway for assessment, prescription, training, and monitoring for safe mobility scooter use, and alternative solutions when mobility scooters may not be the best option.

APT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

To understand:

1. The skills required for safe mobility scooter use
2. The different types of mobility scooters, their functions, and features
3. The Person - Environment - Occupation (The PEO Model) to assist with scooter selection, and why you would consider one type of scooter over another
4. The range of accessories, their clinical benefits, use, and application
5. How to work with your Equipment Specialist to get the most out of a scooter trial
6. Ongoing care and maintenance of your scooter
7. Resources available to assist in Mobility Scooter Assessment, Prescription, and Training

Practical Session – small groups will rotate through all of the following stations to enable hands-on experience

STATION 1: Fit & function of different types of scooters

STATION 2: Indoor on-device skills:

STATION 3: Outdoor on-device skills (weather dependent)

STATION 4: Accessories, transport, and scooter maintenance

Mobility Scooter APT = 3 CPD Hours

Presenters

Presented by the Aidacare Clinical Training and Development Team who are Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists by background. The team bring with them a wealth of experience across a diverse range of practice settings including Community, Aged Care, Acute Care and Complex Seating. The team are passionate about Assistive Technology and assisting therapists in understanding and selecting appropriate equipment solutions to improve end-users independence and overall quality of life.

The session will be held in the IKOS room at Sunnybrae Estate Function Estate
