The Washington Wind Symphony invites you to an afternoon of dramatic storytelling and breathtaking music with our upcoming concert, Curtain Call. Join us on October 26, 2025, at 2 PM at the Robertson Performing Arts Center, where we will perform a program celebrating the vibrant interplay between dance, passion, and performance.
The concert begins by transporting you to the beautiful island of Puerto Rico with Giovanni Santos's "Blue Dances," a musical tribute to the island’s enduring spirit. The piece, which begins with the gentle sounds of the ocean, swells with hopeful Latin melodies, a testament to the resilient and positive nature of its people.
From there, we’ll move to the royal courts of 17th-century France with Bob Margolis's arrangement of "Terpsichore." Inspired by the Greek Muse of dance, this work is an explosion of energy and unpredictable moods, capturing the wild essence of ancient dances with explosive, virtuosic flourishes.
The heart of the program features a powerful collaboration with acclaimed soprano Kimberly Giordano. Praised for being "smoothly eloquent" and for her ability to "cover considerable emotional ground," Ms. Giordano will join us for a special performance of Three Puccini Arias. These iconic pieces from the operas La bohème, Madam Butterfly, and Tosca are arranged for soprano and wind ensemble, allowing Ms. Giordano to bring her expressive blend of elegance and emotion to these timeless melodies. From Mimì’s heartbreaking farewell to Tosca’s desperate prayer, her performance will give voice to some of opera's most passionate moments.
The afternoon concludes with the electrifying energy of Leonard Bernstein’s "Symphonic Dances from West Side Story." This theatrical suite captures the full dramatic range of the classic musical, from the competitive fervor of the "Mambo" to the tragic conclusion of the "Rumble." It’s the perfect, dynamic finale for a concert that celebrates life, love, and the stage.
Don't miss the Washington Wind Symphony's "Curtain Call," a truly memorable concert experience. And be sure to stay until the very end for a thrilling, well-known finale that will have you humming your way home -- you just might be surprised to see how many trombones show up (spoiler, it’s 76)!
