SoulFood Poetry Night begins its 20th year of monthly poetry readings on August 21, 2025 at 6:00 p.m. Tonight’s poetry performances are by Rena Priest (former Washington state poet laureate) and Marie Marchand (former Ellensburg poet laureate). Please bring your own poems for our open mic! And don’t forget—admission is FREE!
RENA PRIEST served as the sixth Washington State poet laureate and has received a Washington State Book Award. She has also received fellowships from the Academy of American Poets, Indigenous Nations Poets, and the University of Washington Libraries. Her poems and nonfiction appear widely, and her forthcoming collection of essays, Positively Uncivilized, will be published in September 2025 by Raven Chronicles Press as the winner of their 2024 Keepers of the Fire Award.

MARIE MARCHAND served as poet laureate of Ellensburg, Washington, from 2022 to 24. She is a Pushcart Prize nominee, and her poetry has appeared in Poetry Ireland Review, Crannóg Magazine, Catamaran Literary Reader, California Quarterly, and Tikkun Magazine. She is the author of Gifts to the Attentive (2022) and Mostly Sweet, Lovely, Human Things (2025). Marie is a graduate of Naropa University and The Iliff School of Theology where she studied psychology, religion, and peacemaking.
