Clemens Tradition is a duo with a combined 100 years of experience in the traditional fiddling and folk music scene. They both are members of the Clemens family, hence the name Clemens Tradition.
Jackie Hobbs has been an old time fiddler for 47 years. She is a NYS Inductee to the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame and Museum in Osceola, NY. She was fortunate to have been raised near Osceola, NY, where her Grandmother, Alice Clemens, co-founded the New York State Old Tyme Fiddler’s Association and the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame and Museum Institute.
Jackie spent many years learning fiddle from her Grandmother, whose nickname was” Queen of the New York State Fiddlers”. Jackie also was able to travel to many of Alice’s appearances throughout the Northeast and just to the north in Ontario, Canada. Jackie was fortunate to learn tunes and techniques from many people who are members of the NYS Fiddlers Hall of Fame and several who are members of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame as well.
Although Jackie is a general music teacher in the New York Public School system, she has learned a majority of the tunes she plays by watching and listening to other fiddlers and listening to fiddle tunes until she has them memorized. She has learned several tunes that were played by her Great-Great Uncles and their father, Levi Colvin..
Jackie makes various appearances around New York State during the year and spends much of her year planning events and performances at the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame in Osceola, NY. She has been honored as a tradition bearer by Genesee Country Museum in Mumford, NY.
Jackie’s musical influences come from Canada, New England and New York State fiddlers. She has learned some tunes from other areas, but loves the old time traditions of her home.
Diana Carpenter is daughter of Alice Clemens. She has been playing guitar, piano, bass and singing as well as a little bit of fiddle since her teenage years, starting as a backup musician for her mother. She went on to accompany other great fiddlers as needed including Don Perkins, Ken Bonner, and of course, Jackie Hobbs. She spent many years as a partner with musician, George Harrington singing and playing around Central New York music scene.
Both Jackie and Diana are very invested in keeping the traditional fiddling scene alive, especially in Osceola at the North American Fiddlers Hall of fame and Museum.
People are welcome to go into the North American Fiddler's Hall of Fame and Museum onsite and get a glimpse into the history of fiddling in our area and learn about great fiddlers from around North America. Families can sit back and enjoy the music while children play in the play area adjacent to the pavilion. Others can enjoy a card game on the Museum porch as they listen to the music. There is a flea market on site with several new items and a museum shop that has fiddle memorabilia.
You are welcome to bring your own chairs but if you forget there are chairs and tables available to sit at. We hope you come to listen to or play an afternoon of music with us at the North American Fiddler's Hall of Fame and Museum.
