We cordially invite you to attend the 64th annual Lambie Dew Oration to be held on Thursday, the 23rd of October, at the University of Sydney Great Hall.
The Lambie Dew Oration is an annual event, held since 1958 in honour of Charles Lambie and Harold Dew, the first Bosch Chairs of Medicine and Surgery respectively. Professor Lambie was the first person in Europe to use insulin in the treatment of diabetic patients in 1922 and was the first full-time academically trained Professor of Medicine in Australia. Professor Dew served in the first World War and was appointed the Bosch Chair of Surgery at the University of Sydney in 1930, becoming the first full-time Professor of Surgery to be appointed in an Australian University.
This year, SUMS is proud to announce that the oration will be delivered by Professor Georgina Long AO on ‘Courageous Medicine: Evidence Users and Evidence Creators’.
Professor Long is the Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), and Chair of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research at MIA and The University of Sydney. Her groundbreaking work in immuno-oncology and targeted therapies in melanoma research has led to her being named the 2024 Australian of the Year alongside Professor Richard Scolyer. Professor Long’s work embodies the values we strive to emulate as students: excellence in research, compassionate care and bold, translational science.
The event will begin at 6:00pm in the Ante Room of the Great Hall at the University of Sydney where drinks and canapes will be provided. The oration will then begin from 7:00pm within the Great Hall and there will be time for questions before the event concludes by 8:30pm.
