At Home with David Langston-Jones

We will be opening a townhouse in Redfern by architect David Langston-Jones.

While Australia has the dubious honour of building the largest homes on the planet, David and has always been interested in doing more with less. He said, "that doesn’t mean compromise, but quite the opposite: a celebration of the miniature".

On an awkward site of just 155 sq m, this inner-city project presents two tiny, terraced houses on a footprint little bigger than a pair of double garages. Every square centimetre, inside and out, has been considered in exacting detail for its functional and aesthetic impact on both the occupants and surrounding neighbourhood.

The result is a highly legible pair of buildings that are articulate and expressive toward the street while exhibiting a spaciousness that belie their size. Despite being cheek-by-jowl with neighbours and with carefully arranged openings framing views onto Japanese Zen Gardens which borrow from distant trees and the sky, these homes are private yet transparent. They perfectly suit those who see their home as a crucial part of the environment, not as castles to command, but to use socially in conjunction with others.

The garden was designed by Shunmyo Masuno, one of Japan’s foremost garden designers.
