We hope that you can join the Triangle String Orchestra (trianglestringorchestra.org) for a FREE evening of song and dance music, 7:00 PM, Wednesday, May 7, Carswell Recital Hall, Meredith College.
Program:
- Antonin Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance
- Johann Strauss Jr.’s The Blue Danube
- Hoedown from the ballet Rodeo scored by Aaron Copland
- a habanera, La Bella Cubana, by Afro-Cuban composer Joseph (Jose) White
- a Mexican waltz-like melody, La Bruja, a favorite tune of
mariachi bands, arranged by Jorge L. Vargas
- a set of variations on the “Pong Lang Dance,” one of
Thailand’s most popular melodies, arranged by Richard Meyer
- a string arrangement of Sarabande by J.S. Bach, from his well-known Cello Suite, No. 6, arranged by our own Alan Ward
- Music from Pride & Prejudice - played by Meredith Master of Music, long-time piano teacher and beloved member of TSO, Betty White, accompanied by the orchestra.
Finally, did you know that Bach had a sense of humor? A highlight of the evening will be the orchestra’s performance of several movements of his “Coffee Cantata,” a hilarious cantata about a daughter’s passion for coffee to the dismay of her father.
Music Department Chair, world-class, traveled soprano and voice teacher at Meredith College, Jean Wozencraft-Ornellas, will sing two arias and the final chorus from this cantata; and Meredith guitar teacher William von Reichbauer, an upright bassist, guitarist, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and composer, will provide the narration. You will also hear William accompany the orchestra on two of the dance pieces.
