THEME: Open to Awe
When was the last time you experienced something truly awe-inspiring — a stunning sunset, a wonderful concert, a conversation with someone extraordinary? And how did it feel to lean into awe? July's theme invites us to remember the power and benefits of awe-filled experiences and to consider the ways that attuning to awe, inviting it even, is an essential part of living gratefully.
Questions for Discussion and Reflection
How would you describe awe? Although it overlaps with them, what makes it distinct from experiences like joy or delight?
Is there an experience of awe that you carry with you as a treasured memory? If so, what is it, and how did that experience of awe impact you?
What are the primary sources of awe in your life right now? Other people, art and music, the natural world, everyday beauty? Are you making enough time for these known sources of awe? How so? Or, if not, what might you do differently?
What enables you to experience awe in the everyday and “ordinary”? What is accessible to you right now?
Have you ever felt “grabbed by life” — had a sudden or unexpected experience of awe — in the way that Br. David describes? What enabled you to open fully to this experience?
What, if anything, got in the way or kept you guarded?
How does gratitude help you awaken to awe? Conversely, how does attuning to sources of awe awaken gratitude?
Have you experienced the impacts of awe that Dacher Keltner highlights in his research (named in the introduction)?
