REDress and Fish for the Future Display: Oct. 1-31 - Adult Services

The REDress Project and Fish for the Future Displays will be visiting the adult services department in October.

The REDress project is a visible reminder of the missing and murdered indigenous women whom we have lost throughout North America. The installation strives to renew our attention to the undervaluing of indigenous women's lives, whose disappearances are often not even reported in crime statistics, much less resolved. https://www.JaimeBlackArtist.com/exhibitions/

The Fish for the Future Display sheds light on the impact of Enbridge's deteriorating Line 5 Pipeline. This pipeline actively transports oil throughout 645 miles of countryside in Wisconsin, Michigan and Ontario. Since its construction in 1953, this pipeline has been responsible for at least 1.1 million gallons of toxic oil spills. Learn about the call to decommission the aging pipeline and put a stop to the risk it poses to our local environment, food and water supply, wildlife, and indigenous communities. https://www.SierraClub.org/wisconsin/line-5

Siobhan Marks Presents on Oil Pipelines and Your Environmental Impact: Monday, Oct. 6, 6:30 - 8 p.m. - First Presbyterian Church, 716 College Avenue, Racine, WI 53403

Learn about the impact of oil pipelines on native communities and how your carbon footprint plays a role. After the presentation, participate in Q&A. At the end of the program, you will be invited to support the Free Will collection, which benefits a local indigenous women's shelter.

---------------------

Bad River Documentary Viewing: Tuesday, Oct. 14, 5:30-8 p.m. - Community Room

The new documentary film ""Bad River"" chronicles the Wisconsin-based Bad River Band's ongoing fight for sovereignty. As their story unfolds, you will learn about the battle to save our largest freshwater resource in America — Lake Superior — from Enbridge's eroding Line 5 pipeline and other environmental threats.

------------------

Tote Bag Decorating: Saturday, Oct. 25, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. - Community Room

Decorate tote bags — or a surface of your choice — with paint and a design created by Milwaukee artist Susan Bietila. While you personalize your art project, learn about the threat Pipeline 5 poses to the environments and communities surrounding the Great Lakes. Then, we'll cover efforts by local indigenous communities to thwart disaster and how you can help.

The Take Action program is presented courtesy of Unity Racine, the Sierra Club Wisconsin Chapter (SEGG), the Racine Interfaith Coalition's Environmental Task Force, Coming Together Racine, the Racine Coalition for Peace and Justice, the Social Justice Committee of the Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church, and First Presbyterian Church.
