Illuminating Malta – Public Lecture by Nigel Klemenčič-Puglisevich

‘Illuminating Malta’, an intriguing talk by Nigel Klemenčič-Puglisevich set to take place on Friday, 9th May at St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat, will take a closer look at the ancient objects that lit homes, temples, and catacombs for centuries, namely ceramic oil lamps.

From the Phoenician to the Roman to the Islamic period, these everyday items reveal far more than just how people saw in the dark. Their shapes, decorations, and even the oils that fuelled them tell stories of changing traditions, trade, and beliefs. This talk will explore how oil lamps were made, what symbols they carried, and what they reveal about life in ancient Malta.

By studying these artefacts, we will shine a light on Malta’s deep ties to the wider Mediterranean world. The talk will start at 6:00pm.
