***Hope to see you 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. this Saturday, May 3, at the Lamesa Dam ! Save All external officer Red Pasetes will speak and share about Save ALL and rescuing stray animals. Founder Desiree Carlos is grateful to author Lalaine Manaog-Danao for making Save ALL rescues the beneficiaries of this event.
RESCUE A STRAY, SAVE A LIFE
Saving a stray animal is not easy. The good news is: there are many ways to save a life. You can feed a stray, rescue one from the street, foster one, or adopt another.
Or you can write a book on stray dogs and help encourage more humans to be kind to strays. Then raise funds to help dogs and cats rescued from the streets.
This is what author Lalaine Duano Manaog-Danao did when she wrote “Derby, Ang Asong Iniwan.”
She is now raising funds to have more copies of the book printed and to help rescued dogs and cats of Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL.
Save ALL shares that there are three kinds of strays:
1. the ones who were born in the streets because their mom was a stray dog;
2. the ones who got lost because they panicked and ran out of the house due to the loud sound of firecrackers; and
3. the ones who were abandoned.
Abandoning a dog is one of the most cruel things a furparent can do to a pet. How can a dog who grew up inside a home adjust to a life of a stray who has to look for and fight for food and space in the streets, who is hurt by cruel humans, and who has to learn to cross the streets without being hit by a vehicle?
The book Derby takes us on a stray dog’s journey from being abandoned, to surviving in the street, and then being adopted. It teaches humans about kindness and resilience.
Danao hopes to encourage more humans to be kind to strays through this book, thus the fundraising event for the book printing and for Save ALL rescues. Dubbed “Walk for Compassion, Walk for Nature,” it will be held at 7 a.m. on May 3, Saturday, at the La Mesa Eco Park, Quezon City.
There will be a pet blessing; free anti-rabies vaccine; a demo on pet shampoo making; and awarding of walk medals for furparent and pet.
The entrance fee is P499. The participant will get a walk cap, pet bandana, pin badge, and medals.
Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL, an animal welfare group registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has rescued over 1,000 dogs and cats from the streets, pounds, and abusive owners for 12 years now. It has had more than 300 dogs and cats spayed or neutered to help in animal population control. It has fed dogs and cats in three pounds, and continues stray feeding in Rizal, Metro Manila, and Bulacan.
The author is the executive director of Tails, Trees and Seas Org. Inc. and president/executive director of Tulay Bahaghari.
She is also a trainer on creative crafts and stories for Filipino children for child development workers and on creative teaching strategies for day care children. She also wrote three other books.
The story behind the story, in the words of author Lalaine Danao:
“Why I wrote the book Derby, Ang Asong Iniwan. As I sat down to write this storybook, I wanted to explore themes of resilience, hope, and human-animal bond. Derby's story resonated with me, and I hoped to inspire empathy and compassion in readers. Through Derby's journey I aimed to highlight the importance of kindness, adoption, and second chances. I believe stories like Derby can spark positive change and encourage young readers to make a difference in their community.
Writing about Derby also allowed me to shed light on the plight of abandoned animals and the challenges they face. I wanted the children to understand the emotional depth of these animals and the transformative power of love and care. By sharing Derby's story, I aspired to inspire readers to consider rescuing strays, adopting pets and supporting animal welfare initiatives.
I hope that the Derby's tale will encourage the children to look beyond the surface and understand the complexities of animal emotion and needs. Through Derby's experiences, I explored the themes of abandonment, loneliness and ultimately, redemption. I wanted to show how even in the darkest moments, there is always hope for a better tomorrow.
By giving Derby a voice, I hoped to amplify voices of all abandoned animals and bring attention to their struggles.
Ultimately, Derby, Ang Asong Iniwan is a testament to the enduring spirit of animals and the profound impact they have on our lives. The book also encourages the readers to become responsible and committed pet owners.
I hope readers especially the kids, find inspiration in Derby's journey and are motivated to make a positive impact in the world. By sharing this story I aim to leave a lasting impression on readers and inspire a deeper appreciation for animals that share our world.” (DC)
