Sonic Chambers Quartet is a new formation co-led by New Orleans-based clarinetist and saxophonist Byron Asher and New York City-based saxophonist and clarinetist Tomas Majcherski and making music at the nexus of contemporary composition and expansive improvisation. The multi-instrumentalists and composers have known each other and performed together for over 10 years, primarily in the New Orleans music scene. In addition to their shared experiences as musicians, their friendship is deepened by strikingly similar life paths prior to meeting – including past work in avant garde theater and formal studies in philosophy and religion. Their music is richly informed by these experiences, grounding their collaboration in dialogues around improvisation and composition, performance, art and collectivity. Their debut recording Kiss of the Earth was released in April 2025 on noted Brooklyn-based adventurous music label 577 Records. It features long-time collaborators Matt Booth on bass and Doug Garrison on drums.
Byron Asher is a saxophonist and clarinetist and composer based in New Orleans and working at the intersection of broadly experimental composition and jazz and improvised music. Raised in Maryland, he has become an integral member of New Orleans’ creative music community since arriving there in 2011, working as a bandleader, collaborator, improviser, composer, and curator and releasing over 10 albums as a leader or co-leader. In 2025, he released three new recordings, including Sonic Chambers Quartet's Kiss of the Earth, and two recordings with European collaborators: Clarinets & Drums (Yes We Cannibal/Sinking City Records) and Folk Songs From Imaginary Places (Ma/Searching Records). His 2022 release Doubles received 4 stars from Downbeat Magazine and was called "unbearably beautiful" by Pitchfork Magazine. More at byronasher.com.
