_________________________________
Arba Sicula’s Sicelitude Prize aims at recognizing members who have espoused the ideals of the organization and have contributed specifically towards the achievement of its goals, which are to study, preserve and disseminate the language and culture of Sicily around the world. Arba Sicula will recognize and honor two individuals who have been extremely helpful in promoting the language and culture of Sicily: they are Italian Charities of America’s President Domenic Giampino and Salvatore Liotta. A bronze award commissioned by sculptor Carlo Puleo will be given to the recipients; the sculpture shows a man and a woman with an image of the island of Sicily in the foreground and distantly across the sea another land that symbolizes America.
The second part of the program will include a panel discussion on the importance of the Sicilian language with Board of Directors of Italian Charities of America; President Domenic Giampino, Board Chair Josephine Manzella, Vice President Dr. Alan Hartman and Treasurer Anthony Lofaso and Arba Sicula’s President Dr. Gaetano Cipolla and Vice President Nino Provenzano.. The evenings’ festivities will be followed by a rendition of our favorite Sicilian songs by musician Joseph Giannini aka Gypsy Joe.
Italian Charities of America thanks Dr. Cipolla for taking the worldwide lead in this mission of promoting and preserving Sicilian language and culture. We have been using Dr. Cipolla’s textbook in teaching our Sicilian language courses since Sicilian language courses were first organized by Italian Charities of America’s President, Domenic Giampino in 2009. Italian Charities of America holds the world record in the modern era for teaching the Sicilian language in formal courses in a classroom setting, and now also available virtually.
This event is sponsored by Arba Sicula and Italian Charities of America with funding to Italian Charities of America’s cultural programs from The Giambelli Foundation and NYC Discretionary Funding from Council Member Robert Holden.
