Stuart Vandegraaff - reeds, compositions
Elsen Price - double bass
Chris Fields - percussion
Stu’s journey started on Gunai/Kurnai country a while back and he is now based on Yuin country. Known for his exquisite ornamental improvisational style, he has drawn inspiration equally from the global and local jazz tradition, European, classical, Middle-Eastern, Brazilian and a variety of other influences.
Elsen was raised on Kamilaroi country, where he developed a primal resonance with string and wood. His journey has taken him around this great southern land, studying on Gadigal country and earning a reputation as a significant artist and performer locally and internationally in Japan and Europe.
Sydney-based drummer/percussionist Chris Fields is originally from the USA where he grew up in the thriving music scene of Atlanta, Georgia and began playing professionally at the age of sixteen. Chris performed extensively in the USA, Mexico and Caribbean before moving to Australia in 2001 where he has become an in-demand drummer/percussionist and a leading collaborator with musicians from all over the world. He is a leading performer on Drum Kit, Latin and Classical Percussion and has studied North Indian tabla intensively under his guru, Pt. Ram Chandra Suman.
These three have met at this point in time, aligning to travel alongside one-other to acknowledge their paths and create new Australian stories. Welcome to the unique sound that is the Routes Trio.
