As a distinguished contemporary Māori visual artist with Greek, Ngāti Tiipa and Tainui heritage, Jimmy is celebrated for his vibrant pop-art aesthetic and profound exploration of life, family, land, and wairua.
Born in Pukekohe in 1972, this exhibition marks a significant return to his mother's whenua and is Jimmy's first exhibition in this part of South Auckland. His dynamic artistic style, compelling narratives and unique visual language, encompass; painting, sculpture, print and digital mediums. Characterised with bold colour palettes and a commitment to indigenous storytelling, through texture and whakapapa.
Despite not choosing formal art school training, Jimmy has forged a distinctive artistic path driven by passion, with a career spanning 30 years. Including decades as a professional scenic artist in the film industry and 12 years as a solo exhibiting artist, Jimmy's work has garnered national and international acclaim.
His participation in the landmark Toi Tū Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art Exhibition at Auckland Art Gallery stands as a significant highlight, alongside international exhibitions in Melbourne, Los Angeles, New York, Beijing, and Chengdu.
