Meet Jean McDonald, our presenter for the October Guild Meeting.
Jean McDonald’s quilting journey has taken her from coast to coast as her family moved with the military. She first learned the basics of piecing from Eleanor Burns, then expanded her skills through local classes in California, Maryland, and now Kansas. Since 1992, she has been teaching piecing classes and currently leads a lively group of about 45 quilters in a Block-of-the-Month program through her studio each year.
A passionate longarm quilter for over 12 years, Jean has completed more than 2,800 quilts in the past six years alone. She loves to see the variety of quilt patterns that come through her studio and takes pride in finding simpler, more efficient ways to approach every quiltmaking step—whether cutting multiple layers or breaking down a complex pattern.
Jean’s love of sewing began early—she received her first sewing machine, a Holly Hobby model without a bobbin, at just six years old. She went on to make her first quilt in 1990, and soon after discovered the world of quilting through Eleanor Burns’s television programs. By 2003, Jean had fully embraced longarm quilting, trading in her domestic machine for larger equipment to tackle king-sized quilts with ease.
Today, Jean balances her work on two longarm machines with a collection of Berninas she uses for piecing and teaching. In addition to her ongoing classes, she has hosted quilt retreats, including events at the Missouri Star Quilt Company in Hamilton, Missouri. With more than three decades of teaching and thousands of quilts completed, Jean continues to inspire quilters of all skill levels with her energy, creativity, and practical approach to the art of quilting.
