Malheur Field Station
34848 Sodhouse Lane, Princeton, United States
We're kicking off the Fall season with a birding trip to Eastern Oregon. Come explore Malheur National Wildlife Refuge and look for golden eagles, sage grouse, and rosy finches. Established in 1908 to protect migratory waterfowl, the refuge today encompasses over 187,000 acres, which is a stop along the Pacific Flyway. This is an important area for resting, breeding and nesting migratory birds and other wildlife.
Cost for the trip will be around $99 per person for the entire extended weekend (more information will be sent to participants in a follow up email).
Lodging is at the Malheur Field Station in the E dormitory. There are 10 rooms, and our capacity for this trip is 18 people. Unfortunately, no pets are allowed.
Food is not provided, so you will need to bring your own. There is a kitchen in the dorm with a fridge, stove, microwave, and oven. There is the potential to travel to Burns for an evening outing.
This trip will involve a moderate amount of walking, driving, and waking up early to get to birding destinations. Other fun non-bird activities are stargazing and soaking at the Crystal Crane Hot Springs.
Here is a loose agenda of the weekend. Friday afternoon around 4pm we arrive at Malheur Field Station, with the option for evening stargazing. All day Saturday will be spent driving around and exploring the refuge hot spots. In the evening we'd make a stop into Burns for dinner and a quick stroll around the town. Sunday morning will start off with an early morning birding at Kiger Gorge and continue with more exploration of the refuge then check out Crane Hot Springs. Monday morning before 11 am we will depart for Portland.
