About the event

UMES Extension's Aronia Berries Picking Contest
Join a fun contest to pick Aronia berries and learn their uses at hands-on classes at the UMES Extension farm in Princess Anne.

About this Event

Aronia berries at the UMES Extension farm are ready to pick, and you are invited to compete in a picking contest on Aug. 14 to win prizes and bragging rights.

The berry picking contest will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the UMES Research, Extension and Teaching Farm at 10789 Stewart Neck Road in Princess Anne.

Teams of four are invited to register for the contest with a chance to win first, second and third place prizes. Also take home treats made from Aronia. The contest is limited to eight teams, but spectators are welcome.

After picking the berries, enjoy lunch and pick one of three classes offered to learn how to put those berries to use.

Participants can take only one class to be held 12:30-2 p.m., and you must for the class of your choice:

  • Arts and Crafts (dye) with Sue Bromm — Bromm is a local textile artist who works with foraged foliage and flowers to dye and print natural fabrics. This technique is called eco-printing or botanical printing. She will demonstrate dyeing with aronia berries on silk and cotton, and will offer instructions on creating at home.
  • Wine Making with Ralph Bucca — Explore the fermentation process, and learn how to select the right fruits in this hands-on class. You will leave with a foundational knowledge to start crafting your own homemade wine.
  • Jam Making with We Be Jammin’ — Learn how to turn fresh fruits into rich flavorful jams. Discover the art of balancing sweetness, acidity and texture while gaining essential canning tips to enjoy the jams year-round.

The cost is $20 per participant or $40 for a team of four, and lunch is included.
