About the event

Managing fire for wildlife. Prof. Em. Mike Clarke
Managing fire for wildlife: it’s not rocket science, it’s way more complex than that!
Guest speaker: Mike Clarke, Prof. Em. Zoology. Ecological, Plant and Animal Sciences La Trobe University

Following catastrophic fires, like those last summer in the Little Desert and Gariwerd (Grampians) National Parks, there are often calls for more frequent and extensive prescribed burning to lessen the impact of future wildfires. In his talk, Prof Mike Clarke, a fire ecologist from La Trobe University, will unpack some of the complexity of managing our highly flammable bushland to conserve its unique wildlife, using examples drawn from his research group’s studies across southern Australia. He’ll highlight the critical importance of up-to-date, place-based, local knowledge to inform sound management.
