The Backsell returns on July 25! Join Blues bandleader and radio host Jason Vivone for an intimate evening of music exploration at The Listyning Room. In "The Backsell" Jason will curate and spin a selection of recordings, delving into the deep and complex connections between the music we all love.
Segment highlights:
Who Was "Kansas City Kitty?" An exploration of a jazz/blues song that was first recorded in 1929 by the Coon- Sanders Nighthawk Orchestra. It was such a hit, it inspired other tunes and the soon-to-be Gospel legend Thomas Dorsey to create a character to duet with his own Georgia Tom persona. There's speculation on whether it is the same woman on each of the Kansas City Kitty tracks.
Ladies Who Swing the Band! Popular in the 1940s and 1950s, Ella Mae Morse was an American singer whose recordings mixing jazz, blues, and country styles influenced the development of rock and roll.
Spotlight on Harvey Fuqua - Doo Wop to Sexual Healing - an American R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, and record label executive. Fuqua founded the seminal R&B/doo-wop group the Moonglows in the 1950s and later had a successful production career, including the famous Marvin Gaye hit.
Just like in radio broadcasting, Jason will "backsell" each set, providing insightful commentary and anecdotes that illuminate the history, influences, and cultural significance of the music you're hearing. It's a chance to rediscover old favorites, discover new gems, and gain a deeper appreciation for the art of recorded sound.
