Sonoko Matsuda's works: The Box of Time (Toki-no-Hako)
Matsuda’s works are both objects and small spaces — vessels that hold what words cannot. Life, she says, is not always radiant. Yet within it, there are moments that gleam unmistakably. If we can hold even one of those moments close, its light will stay with us. Her glass boxes are created to protect such light — to cradle the fragile shimmer of time. Their surfaces carry faint, organic patterns inspired by nature: the texture of wind, the trace of water, the rhythm of growth. Each piece becomes a home for what is precious — a quiet place where memory, hope, and time coexist. She calls this series “Toki no Hako” — The Box of Time.
For Matsuda, what is “precious” transcends the boundaries of past, present, and future. It is not measured by value or status, but by its reflection of one’s own life. She hopes her works invite us to notice that beauty is not distant, but close — shimmering softly within reach, in the gentle unfolding of each day.
Her glass is also a mirror of what she sees as someone shaped by Japan’s natural and cultural landscape — a world where beauty resides in impermanence, and where the fleeting is cherished rather than feared. Through her art, she seeks to share that sensibility: a quiet dialogue between nature, time, and the soul.
About Kenichi Sasakawa's works:
Each of his glass works contains colour and tiny bubbles — elements that shift and breathe with the changing light of the day and the seasons. Rather than focusing solely on the object itself, Sasakawa seeks to enrich the space around it: the way a piece of glass transforms a room, a table, or a moment of daily life.
His works are not simply seen; they are experienced — as light, colour, and air move together in quiet dialogue to form a serenity in a space.
Working with free-blown glass, Sasakawa blends original colour formulations (by using recycled glass mixing with metals) and delicate bubbles into each piece. The process harmonizes contrasts — the warmth and softness of traditional glassmaking with the clear, composed forms of contemporary design. Through this fusion, his work embodies both history and modernity, stillness and movement — glass that holds not only light, but also time itself.
