Fantastická fúze post-bopu a hudební komedie
The Jazz Passengers navazují na brooklynský Big Apple Circus Band a hlavně na průkopnickou skupinu The Lounge Lizards Johna Lurieho, kde se potkali zakladatelé kapely – saxofonista Roy Nathanson a trombonista Curtis Fowlkes.

The Jazz Passengers založili v r. 1987 saxofonista Roy Nathanson a trombonista Curtis Fowlkes, kteří našli silné tvůrčí spříznění během svého předchozího působení v Big Apple Circus Bandu a hlavně v průkopnické skupině The Lounge Lizards Johna Lurieho. Název kapely, který parafrázuje Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, naznačuje divokou jízdu po výstředních proudech moderní americké hudby. K původní sestavě patřili vedle Nathansona a Fowlkese Marc Ribot (kytara), Bill Ware (vibrafon), E. J. Rodriguez (perkuse), Bradley Jones (baskytara) a Jim Nolet (housle).
Na legendárním albu Reunited, které kritika označuje za ekvivalent kubistického obrazu, hostují Elvis Costello a zpěvačka Blondie – Debbie Harry. Na orchestrálních úpravách svého repertoáru spolupracovali s Buffalo Philharmonic, BBC Concert Orchestra či Northern Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra.

Jedná se excelentní a vyhledávané hudebníky, kteří spolupracují či spolupracovali s takovými jmény jako jsou: The Lounge Lizards, Bill Frisell, Sheryl Crow, John Zorn, Calexico, Anthony Braxton, Groove Collective, John Cale, Elvin Jones, Steven Bernstein (Sexmob), Bruce Springsteen, Ornette Coleman, David Byrne, Vernon Reid, Nancy Sinatra, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, Cibo Mato, Marc Ribot, a další.
Bubeníka E.J. Rodrigueze, který je nejen vyhledávaným bubeníkem, ale také příležitostným hercem, jste mohli vidět ve filmu Kafe a cigára Jima Jarmusche.
Zajímavostí je, že tehdy mladí a začínající The Jazz Passengers vystoupili 4.10.1990 v Praze v rámci Knittting Factory European Tour společně se jmény jako Sonny Sharrock band a dalšími a stali se tak jedněmi z prvních reprezentantů downtown scény, kteří vystoupili v porevolučním Československu.

The Jazz Passengers build on the legacy of the Brooklyn Big Apple Circus Band and, above all, the pioneering group The Lounge Lizards of John Lurie, where the band’s founders – saxophonist Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes – first met.

The Jazz Passengers were founded in 1987 by saxophonist Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, who discovered a strong creative bond during their previous work with the Big Apple Circus Band and especially with John Lurie’s groundbreaking group The Lounge Lizards. The name of the band, a play on Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, suggests a wild ride through the eccentric currents of modern American music. The original lineup included, alongside Nathanson and Fowlkes, Marc Ribot (guitar), Bill Ware (vibraphone), E. J. Rodriguez (percussion), Bradley Jones (bass), and Jim Nolet (violin).
On their legendary album Reunited – described by critics as the equivalent of a cubist painting – guest appearances include Elvis Costello and Blondie’s singer Debbie Harry. They have collaborated on orchestral arrangements of their repertoire with the Buffalo Philharmonic, the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Northern Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra.
