About the event

Silvana Greco: Moses Dobruška, Jewish Heresy, and the Invention of Social Philosophy
Moses Dobruška (Brno, 1753 – Paris, 1794) is in known in the Czech Lands, if at all, as a character in Olga Tokarczuk’s monumental novel The Books of Jacob, and as a subject of studies by Gershom Sholem on heretical traditions in Jewish history. Little attention has been paid to him, however, as a significant original thinker who drew from his experience as a Jew swept up in the messianic movement of Jacob Frank, as an Austrian Catholic nobleman, and as a revolutionary Jacobin in France to think through the possibility of a more just society.
Silvana Greco, professor of the sociology of Jewry at the Frei Universität in Berlin, is author of the book Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy: Utopia, Judaism, and Heresy under the French Revolution. Its upcoming Czech translation will help remove a blind spot in the received image of Czech Jewry, which alongside traditional forms of Judaism has also been the site of a strong heretical tradition that left a mark beyond the Jewish community, influencing modern society as it emerged throughout Europe.

This lecture is made possible by support from the Strategie AV 21 research program “Identities in a World of Wars and Crises.”

Moses Dobruška (1753 Brno – 1794 Paříž), známý především z Tokarczukové Knihy Jakubovy a ze Scholemových statí, dosud neměl v českém prostředí samostatné představení, přestože jako frankistický Žid, aristokrat, zednář i jakobín formuloval vize
sociálně spravedlivější společnosti. Tuto opomíjenou osobnost představuje Silvana Greco ve své knize Moses Dobruska and the Invention of Social Philosophy.
