Od końca lat 90. Radian przesuwa granice między abstrakcyjnymi brzmieniami elektronicznymi a instrumentami akustycznymi. Zostało to udokumentowane licznymi trasami koncertowymi i występami na festiwalach na całym świecie, a także na siedmiu albumach długogrających. Ich najnowszy album, „Distorted Rooms” (2023), wydany przez Thrill Jockey (Chicago), jeszcze bardziej rozwija ich unikalną wizję reinterpretacji konwencjonalnych form i brzmień.
Podczas gdy ich poprzedni album, „On Dark Silent Off” (2016), koncentrował się na ekstremalnych zmianach dynamiki i nagłych cięciach, eksplorując związek między wybuchami hałasu a wyraźnie zaznaczonymi momentami ciszy, „Distorted Rooms” skłania się bardziej ku powolnym dynamikom i powtarzalnym strukturom. Oryginalna instrumentacja jest jeszcze bardziej zakamuflowana, a momenty abstrakcji pojawiają się na pod- lub metapoziomach, pozostawiając słuchaczowi decyzję, na czym skupić uwagę i które linie rozwoju (lub ich brak) śledzić – lub w których odpocząć. To tak, jakby dać słuchaczowi wybór, gdzie umieścić lupę w kalejdoskopie misternie splecionych, równoległych dźwięków, struktur, form i motywów. Ulotny hałas pojawia się w otwartej przestrzeni, rytmiczne fragmenty są artykułowane z precyzją, a warstwy hałasu nakładają się na siebie, tworząc nieoczekiwane, złożone momenty indywidualnego piękna. Estetyka Radian reprezentuje subtelne zaburzenie ciągłości.

Since the late ’90s, Radian has been pushing the boundaries between abstract electronic sounds and acoustic instrumentation. This has been documented through extensive worldwide touring and festival appearances, as well as on seven full-length albums. Their latest record, Distorted Rooms, released by Thrill Jockey (Chicago), further expands on their unique vision of rethinking conventional forms and sounds.
While their previous album, On Dark Silent Off (2016), focused on extreme dynamic shifts and abrupt cuts, exploring the relationship between noise bursts and prominently placed moments of silence, Distorted Rooms leans more toward slow developments and repetitive structures. The original instrumentation is even more disguised, and moments of abstraction occur on sub- or meta-levels, leaving it to the listener to decide where to focus attention and which lines of development (or non-development) to follow—or rest in. It’s like offering the listener a choice of where to place the magnifying glass in a kaleidoscope of finely woven parallel sounds, structures, forms, and motives. A fleeting noise appears in the open space, rhythmic fragments are articulated with precision, and layers of noise are stacked to form unexpected, complex moments of individual beauty. Radian’s aesthetics represent a subtle disruption of continuity.
