The Poultney Historical Society is pleased to host a lecture with Dick Smith the author of the book "Vermont Firsts and Other Claims to Fame". This lecture explores various historical "firsts" and notable achievements associated with Vermont. The talk will be held at the Poultney Public Library on Saturday, September 13 at 1pm.

· Constitutional Groundbreaking: The Vermont constitution was the first in America to outlaw slavery for adults, grant universal male suffrage, and establish publicly funded education.
· Revolutionary War Significance: The book details the key role of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys in capturing Fort Ticonderoga.
· Unique Historical Moments: The book covers interesting facts like Grace Coolidge being the only First Lady with a pet raccoon and Vermonters being the first to vote down a major New Deal project.
· Vermont's Pioneering Nature: Smith discusses the state's historical leadership in LGBTQ+ rights and being the first state to legalize recreational marijuana through legislative action.
About the author:
Dick Smith is a local historian who has authored other books on Vermont and local history, including "The Revolutionary War in Bennington County" and "Ethan Allen and the Capture of Fort Ticonderoga: America’s First Victory". He is a past president and current trustee of the Manchester Historical Society. For over twenty years he has been giving history and scenic tours and has appeared on WCAX-TV(CBS) for these tours. Acting as host, Dick’s award-winning public television history series, History Where it Happened” was filmed throughout Vermont.
The Poultney Historical Society will be holding their annual meeting starting at noon and is open to the public.
