- **Event Start and End Date**: Tue, 17 Feb, 2026 at 09:30 am – Wed, 18 Feb, 2026 at 04:30 pm
- **Event Description**: This is a 2 day face to face course aimed at individuals who would like to become accredited Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Facilitating Trainers.About this Eventhttps://youtu.be/ouhKSOGm49gWhat is the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training? The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training (OMMT) on Learning Disability and Autism is named after Oliver McGowan, whose death shone a light on the need for health and social care staff to have better training. The Health and Care Act 2022 introduced a statutory requirement that CQC-registered providers must ensure their staff receive learning disability and autism training appropriate to their role. The OMMT is the standardised training that was developed for this purpose and is the preferred and recommended training for health and social care staff.Oliver's Training also supports the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan ambition by upskilling the wider health and care workforce to provide appropriately adjusted care for people with a learning disability and autistic people to reduce health inequality. You can visit The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism webpage for further information and updates.Who is the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training relevant for?Health workforceSocial care workforceFamily, parent, sibling carers and personal assistants of people with a learning disability and autistic peopleAny person who requires a general awareness of people with a learning disability and autistic peopleWill the training help meet regulatory requirements?By completing the right Tier of the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training, staff will be meeting the requirements of the Health and Care Act 2022 and the CQC.What is the difference between Tiers 1 and 2?Oliver’s training is delivered in 2 Tiers. Staff need to complete either Tier 1 or Tier 2.According to national guidelines:Tier 1 is for those who require a general awareness of people with a learning disability and autistic people, and the support they may need.Tier 2 is for health and social care staff with responsibility for providing care and support for an autistic person or a person with a learning disability. This is anyone who provides, or who may be required to provide, a service to a person with a learning disability or an autistic person, regardless of how often that may occur. In social care, some services are used in a planned way.Tier 1 may be adequate for staff if people currently using the service are known and are not autistic or have a learning disability.Tier 2 may be needed for all social care staff where a person with a learning disability or an autistic person may start to use the services at any time. This is regardless of how often that may happen or type of service. What do you need to deliver the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training? To be able to deliver the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training to others, you will need:Facilitating trainerCo-trainer with lived experience of a learning disabilityCo-trainer with lived experience of autismAll 3 trainers must have attended the relevant Train the Trainer programme* and have achieved the Oliver McGowan Training accreditation before they can deliver any training to others. Training cannot be delivered by any trainer who is not accredited. It is important that the selected facilitating trainers have an in-depth understanding of learning disabilities and autism and meet the facilitating trainer specification as set out by Health Education England.Accredited co-trainers must be appropriately employed, and paid, for their roles as co-trainers for the training they deliver. You can choose to have your own lived experience co-trainers trained (they would need to complete a different Train the Trainer programme). Alternatively, you may be able to source co-trainers via platforms such as LinkedIn. We are aware that there are many Co-Trainers out there who have already been trained and are on the lookout for jobs.* Please note that co-trainers complete a different Train the Trainer programme (in contrast to the one that Facilitating Trainers need to complete). Contact us for further information. What is the Tier 2 Train the Trainer Programme for Facilitating Trainers? The Tier 2 Train the Trainer Programme for Facilitating Trainers is a 2-day programme designed to qualify individuals to deliver the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training to others. Both days are delivered by an approved Oliver McGowan Lead Trainer along with a Learning Disability Co-Trainer and an Autism Co-Trainer.It is important to note that before attending this training, delegates and their organisations must assure themselves that those attending do meet the ‘facilitating trainer’ person specification set out by HEE. HEE states ‘as a facilitating trainer you will have an in-depth understanding of learning disability and autism and are likely to have training experience. You will lead and support experts by experience co-trainers who are autistic or have a learning disability’.Pre-Programme RequirementsThe Oliver McGowan free e-learning must be completed prior to attendance to this programme. At registration, delegates will be required to submit a copy of their e-learning certificate along with a copy of their up-to-date CV or a profile of their work experience and qualifications.Delivery Method – How will it look like on the day?The programme is delivered over 2 days, from 09:30 to 16:30. It can accommodate up to 15 candidates. It is delivered face to face at our training venue in Hertfordshire.Programme Aims and ObjectivesAttendance on this programme will consolidate the learners’ understanding of learning disabilities and autism and will provide them with the skills required to deliver the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training. Successful achievement of the programme will provide learners with the accredited trainer status they require to be able to deliver Tier 2 training to others.By attending the Train the Trainer, delegates will:Familiarise themselves with the content of Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.Consolidate their knowledge of learning disabilities and autism.Acknowledge and understand the value of co-production.Develop skills in delivering Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training.Day 1This session will include the delivery of the full Tier 2 face-to-face training programme that successful delegates will be able to go on to deliver. This will be delivered in the way that newly accredited trainers would be expected to deliver the sessions themselves. The content will also be reviewed from the trainer’s perspective and therefore it is important for delegates to attend this even if they had already completed the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training. The structure of the first day will be as follows:The morning session will focus on the learning disability session. The afternoon session will focus on the autism session.Day 2This session will focus on developing good trainer skills to ensure delegates are able to deliver good quality Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training. This will include consideration to the role of the facilitating trainer and the skills and values required to provide the best possible support, guidance, supervision, and ongoing development to their lived experience co- trainers. The second day will include:Group discussion around the content of the learning disability session.Group discussion around the content of the autism session.Possible questions key facilitators may be asked by their groups and how to respond.Questions and answers from the group on delivery methods and strategies.Co-production and co-facilitation in practice.Supporting experts with a lived experience. On Completion of This ProgrammeDelegates will be advised by the Lead Trainer if they have successfully achieved the Oliver McGowan Tier 2 Train the Trainer Programme for Facilitating Trainers. Those who successfully achieve will also receive notification directly from HEE and will be asked to complete an online form.Successful delegates will then receive their certificate and will be issued with their accredited registration number.Once accredited, delegates will have access to the Tier 2 Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training materials which include PowerPoint slides, trainer/delegate manuals etc.Implementation SupportIn addition to the training, you will have the option to access an implementation support package, where our team will support you in developing your Oliver McGowan Training Department/Team.
