In an immersive and transformative performance unlike any held at Potsdam Public Library, ROUST Records Presents . . . Scott Amendola, Trevor Dunn, and Phillip Greenlief, Tuesday, September 23 at 7:30PM. $10 Door, no one turned away.
Saxophonist and Bb clarinetist Phillip Greenlief, whose work ranges from conventional jazz soloing to composed classical recitals to free improvisation and outright sonic experimentation, returns to PPL following an impressive July solo performance. This time he returns with Trevor Dunn, founding member of Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, and more. Like the duo with Dunn, Greenlief has always enjoyed collaborating for over 30 years with Scott Amendola, an in-demand composer and improviser who has revitalized the drumset with live electronlcs.
Having worked together in various configurations for more than 30 years, the three bring a classic horn - bass - drums trio, a historic jazz formation that each of these players has expanded and exploded. The trio are making PPL their final destination on their North East tour before heading into the studio together for the first time as a group.
The distinguished solo careers of Amendola, Dunn and Greenlief have seen them share stage and studio with eminent artists ranging from Fred Frith, Meredith Monk and Mr Bungle to Nels Cline, Buzz Osborne, Zeena Parkins and John Zorn. But it is this time tested relationship that conjures their most personal and profound creations.
Whether mining electro-acoustic textures that veer into microscopic noise, or the cross pollinated avant-garde history to which these musicians have been active contributors, this trio creates spontaneous improvisations that evoke both abandon and crafted composition.
The musicians' formal and stylistic experimentation is always in service of urgent emotion; you can hear it in the duo recordings of Greenlief and Amendola (Collect My Thoughts, on Nine Winds; Stay With It, on Clean Feed Records) and Greenlief and Dunn (Untitled on Greenlief's Evander Music; Twenty-Seven, on Dunn's Riverworm imprint), as well as in the extensive body of work Amendola and Dunn have created with the Nels Cline Singers.
The trio's tour also follows the ROUST Records release of Greenlief's last album Citta Di Vitti, an album of original compositions inspired by the 1960's film trilogy of Michelangelo Antonioni starring Monica Vitti.
