In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and mayor (Pedro Pascal) sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico. Directed by Ari Aster, with Luke Grimes, Emma Stone and Austin Butler. An A24 Films release.
Eddington is probably Aster’s strongest film visually, with cinematographer Darius Khondji creating the light and shadow for some sweeping, gently ironic evocations of Old West and Old Hollywood myth-making. -Chicago Tribune
This is Aster’s funniest film to date, and makes use of an ever expanding and shifting cast to dot the 150-minute runtime with well-observed comic details and visual payoffs. -Independent
Regardless of how you ultimately stand on “Eddington,” what is undeniable is that it will stay lodged in our collective craws for a long time, as we continue to watch how the themes it incorporates escalate to absurd levels on a daily basis. -San Jose Mercury News
Ari Aster transforms everyday American insanity into one of the most artistically complete and compulsively watchable doom-scrolls of the year. -Elle
It’s not just about the divisiveness of 2020; it’s designed to be divisive itself in 2025. To that end, even if you hate it, it’s kind of done its job. -Rogerebert.com
