TELLURIDE BY THE SEA FEATURE. Based on Alexandra Fuller’s memoir of the same name, the film captures the childhood of 8-year-old Bobo (Lexi Venter, in a stunning performance) on her family farm in Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia) at the end of the Zimbabwean War for independence in 1980. Growing up in the midst of this long running war, Bobo internalizes both sides of the struggle. Conflicted by her love for people on opposing sides, she tries to make sense of her life in a magical way. Through her eight-year-old gaze we witness Rhodesia’s final days, the family’s unbreakable bond with Africa, and the deep scars that war leaves on survivors. Starring, written and directed by Embeth Davidtz.

Official Selections: Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Zurich Film Festival, Palm Springs International Film Festival, Chicago Critics Film Festival

The entire movie rests on the tiny shoulders and remarkably lifelike performance of Lexi Venter… It is a bold risk to put so much weight on a child’s work, but like so many of Davidtz’s choices here, it also turns out to be shrewd. -The Hollywood Reporter

Davidtz has a clear directorial vision that comes through in how she hones in on the complexities of these characters and the chaos of the era. -The Film Experience

The film’s ability to evoke such powerful emotions is sure to leave the audience deeply moved. -Next Best Picture

Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight leaves a lasting mark. -AwardsWatch

For the most part, there’s truth in the foundation of this film, truth that only this filmmaker could provide. -Rogerebert.com
