Situada no extremo sul da Sibéria, fazendo fronteira com a Mongólia, Tuva é não apenas a primeira república da era moderna a eleger uma mulher como presidente (Khertek Anchimaa-Toka, 1940-44), mas também a remota parte do mundo de onde vem um verdadeiro tesouro da world music, reverenciado pela forma sublime e inimitável de apresentar o canto gutural: o quarteto Huun-Huur-Tu. Nos últimos anos, Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, Radik Tyulyush, Alexei Saryglar e Sayan Bapa têm percorrido o globo em digressão, deixando os públicos mais diversos rendidos ao seu fascinante universo sonoro, repleto de harmónicos graves e agudos, em que uma técnica vocal única se funde com instrumentos tradicionais como o igyl, o byzaanchi e o toschpulur (todos de cordas), ou o tuyug (casco de cavalo), o khomuz (harpa de boca) e o tungur (tambor xamânico). Frank Zappa, Kronos Quartet, Johnny “Guitar” Watson e The Chieftains estão entre os vultos da música com quem os Huun-Huur-Tu colaboraram.
Located in the far south of Siberia, on the border with Mongolia, Tuva is not only known as the first modern-era republic to elect a woman as president – Khertek Anchimaa-Toka, who served from 1940 to 1944 – but also as the remote homeland of a true gem of world music: the quartet Huun-Huur-Tu, celebrated worldwide for their sublime and inimitable interpretation of throat singing. In recent years, Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, Radik Tyulyush, Alexei Saryglar, and Sayan Bapa have toured across the globe, captivating audiences of all kinds with their mesmerizing sound – a rich blend of deep undertones and soaring overtones, crafted through a unique vocal technique. Their performances weave this ancient singing style with traditional Tuvan instruments, such as the igyl, byzaanchi, and toschpulur (all string instruments), as well as the tuyug (horse hooves), khomuz (jew’s harp), and tungur (shaman drum).
Their originality and sonic depth have led to collaborations with renowned musical figures including Frank Zappa, Kronos Quartet, Johnny “Guitar” Watson, and The Chieftains.
