This month we will be working in Gabriel Park on a whole series of trail tasks neat the Nature loop. Park at the South Parking Lot on SW Canby St. We will gather to work on the trails down the road a way by the Community Gardens. Look for the big white parks truck and please be 15 minutes early (8:45AM) to meet and get signed in so we can start promptly at 9AM.
We will be placing and repairing some split rail fencing, working on the trail surfaces called „benching“ by smoothing the surface, widening and cutting better back of trail edges and adding some gravel for better winter user traction. We will be using lots of time-honored trail tools, the Grubbers, McLeod’s, Pulaski, Post hole diggers and the usual wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, and more. These are fun community events, and we need volunteers, please join us, everyone is welcome.
If you do plan to join in the fun, give me a heads up on email (
ZGF2ZSAhIG1hbnZpbGxlIHwgc3d0cmFpbHMgISBvcmc=), I can then pass a head count to our Parks leaders. It is also OK to just show up on the workday.
No experience is necessary for these work parties; we will do training on the tools and on the work to be done as we start. These work parties are designed to support a wide range of worker capabilities and build community in our Neighborhoods. We welcome all and all abilities. So, give some thought to joining us or just stop by and say hi. Youth participants must be at least 14 years old without a guardian and at least 10 years old with a guardian.
As always, our work is guided by the Portland Parks Lands Stewardship folks. Parks will bring all the tools, gloves, and materials we need, and also, possibly, coffee, snacks and water. On these work parties it is not necessary to stay for the whole event, and you can work at whatever level your skill and energy allows. It is just great to meet the neighbors and get in a little trail work exercise.
