Meshtastic is an open-source off-grid decentralized mesh network that runs on low-cost low-power devices allowing anybody to communicate with (or control) devices from miles away.
Come learn about lora and the basic ideas and building blocks of creating a mesh network, of applications, and current limitations, of the various device options including that exist and how to build your own.
We will teach you how to build, set up, and customize your own Meshtastic device and node, and then experiment with these together. An affordable communication platform, Meshtastic has applications in emergency communication (disaster resilience), for monitoring sensors (proximal and remote), and for encrypted chat within a personal network. We will discuss how to deploy it for these specific applications, and how to join larger local mesh networks.
Materials: We will provide 2 kinds of kits to build a node. Parts cost about $50. We have a few sponsored kits available.
Prerequisites: All are welcome.
