I think most of us learned—very early—that listening to ourselves could cost us something.

Belonging.
Approval.
Being seen as capable.
Being seen as kind.
Keeping the peace.

So we override the signal.

At work.
At home.
With our partner.
With our kids.
With our friends.
With our siblings.

And then we call it professionalism.
Or maturity.
Or being the bigger person.
