About the event

The Art of the Silver Spoon: Crafting an Heirloom (workshop)
Spoons hold deep cultural significance across the world, having evolved into countless forms with unique meanings. In this intensive workshop, master metalsmith Bill Dawson will guide students through the process of designing and crafting a silver spoon infused with personal meaning. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced metalsmith, you will have the opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece using fabrication techniques or forging an entire spoon from a silver bar.

This workshop offers the chance to craft an object that is not only functional but also symbolic — perfect as a heartfelt gift or a future family heirloom to be passed down for generations. The level of complexity will be tailored to each student’s experience, allowing for a rewarding challenge at any skill level.

Materials cost will vary based on design choices and current metal prices, so students are encouraged to contact the instructor before the class to discuss their ideas. Join us for this special opportunity to transform raw silver into a meaningful keepsake.

SUPPLY INFORMATION
All required materials and supplies will be provided with the non-refundable materials fee. The materials for this course will range from $50-$120 depending on the type of spoon you want to make. Your material fee will be paid in person, directly to the teaching artist.

ABOUT BILL
Bill Dawson began his professional career in metalwork when he took a position at the University of Oregon as a blacksmith, where he crafted tools for the jewelry studio. Since then, he has built his career as a metalsmith, instructor, and researcher, focusing on the history of metalworking techniques. Dawson is less concerned with whether a piece of art is representational, metaphorical, realistic, or abstract; instead, he seeks an underlying creative honesty in the work. This commitment to honest expression serves as the foundation of his art, his teaching, and his life.
