Kia Ora Koutou!
If you are passionate about the importance of pest management to protect our native ecosystems and want to hone or take the next step in your applied conservation skills journey, then this is a great oppurtunity.
We are looking to train the next cohort of 6–10 community members in the use of automatically resetting AT220 possum traps and accompanying field skills to assist in their biannual service round.
Please join us for our Training Day — thanks to the Department of Conservation Community Fund, this is a free, professional-level training hosted by the conservation pest control team at Mammalian Corrections Unit.
The Hikaroroa AT220 trap network spans both the DCC reserve and private land surrounding the Hikaroroa mauka, covering some amazingly beautiful (and steep!) terrain.
These events require an RSVP and will be first come, first served — so please get in touch or click Going on the event if you would like to attend.
This event is a prerequisite for anyone wanting to join our 3-Day Community Trapping Trip (the following weekend) for the first time. If you’ve attended before but would like a refresher before the trip — please come along!
On the Day: Mammalian Corrections Unit (MCU) staff will train you in the use of AT220 traps, how to record data using the Trap.nz program, handheld GPS use, and UHF/VHF handheld radio operation, as well as possum behaviour and the identification of field sign.
We’ll have a break for lunch, and in the afternoon, we’ll go over the trip plan and prepare for the upcoming servicing trip the following weekend.
Further details for this field trip will be sent to anyone who expresses interest.
