Kate Pate Walker PFC - Hall of Fame Induction

You are invited to the Induction of Kate Pate Walker PFC into the Notable People Hall of Fame at the Museum of the Gulf Coast.

During World War II, Kate L. Pate joined the U.S. Army and served in France as a member of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). She was part of the historic 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, known as the “Six Triple Eight,” a predominantly Black, multi-ethnic unit tasked with the enormous job of clearing the military’s mail backlog in Europe.

At the time, millions of undelivered letters and packages were piling up, many addressed only with first names, nicknames, or incomplete information. Army officials feared the lack of mail from home was damaging morale. The backlog was estimated at 17 million items and expected to take six months to sort. Remarkably, the women of the 6888th completed the task in just three months, finishing in May 1945.
