FRIENDS OF PĀTAKA TALK - A STORY OF HANDWEAVING IN AOTEAROA

In association with the exhibition ‘WOVEN: TANTALISING TEXTILES: Port Nicholson Hand Weavers’.

Handweaving has a proud history in Aotearoa (familiar to those of a certain age!) and over the decades has developed from what would have been termed craft, into a sophisticated artform – driven by committed and passionate ‘serious’ weavers who saw its potential. Port Nicholson Hand Weavers embody this aspiration and 50 years later, this exhibition shows why.

Behind the exhibition though, what is the story of the development of ‘serious’ weaving in Aotearoa?

Come and hear Trish Armour, Secretary of Port Nicholson Hand Weavers, relate some of this story and tell us more about the development of handweaving as an artform.
She will speak briefly about her own work, talk about the emergence and decline of handweaving in New Zealand, how craft in general became a mainstream culture in the 1960s-70s, the birth of Port Nic and where weaving in New Zealand is going in the future. She will also give a brief description of the club’s structure and the activities it offers.

Everyone will then move through to Toi Gallery to view the exhibition, where Trish will talk about a few of the works which she thinks may be of interest.
