DAY BOAT: SS Venezuela (25m) & Drift

The SS Venezuela was a steel twin-screw river steamer built in 1905, primarily used for trans-Atlantic freight during the early 20th century. On March 14, 1918, while en route from Swansea to Rouen with a cargo of coal, the vessel was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-59. The attack resulted in a secondary explosion that sank the ship within minutes, leading to the loss of all crew members.

The wreck of the SS Venezuela lies upright on a flat gravel seabed at a depth of 25 meters, making it accessible to divers with advanced open water qualifications. The site features a prominent boiler standing 4 meters above the seabed, with the collapsed bow section rising to about 18 meters. Marine life, including conger eels, can be found within the wreckage, particularly around the boilers.
