Cwmavon Heritage Hour

The 4th meeting will be at 7.30pm on Thursday 19th March. We will be looking at the history of the Community Association, village hall, and its predecessor, the Wesleyan chapel and school room.

Heritage hour was well attended last month, thanks for coming😊.We explored the Eastern Valley Subsistence Production Society Experiment based at the factory in 1937 and started to explore the old ordinance survey maps that we have purchased using money provided by the Torfaen Progession Grant from the Uk Government. We now have 13 maps from 1886 to 1962 and are able to use them to trace the development of the area. We were particularly pleased to welcome Richard Roynon to the group. Richard is a former landlord of the Railway Inn, Cwmavon, who has written and researched a number of local history books.
The next meeting will be on Thursday the 19th February and every 3rd Thursday of the month thereafter. we will be looking at the history of the Westlakes Brewery/old factory building and introducing the older Tythe maps which were produced in the 1840’s. All welcome, Our initial ideas include sharing personal testimony, researching old photographs, maps, newspapers, and visiting local sites of interest, inviting interesting speakers, and discussing old times in a relaxed atmosphere with the bar open ( from 7pm)😊.
