A CO2 laser is a type of gas laser that uses a mixture of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2), and helium (He) as its active medium to produce a highly focused beam of infrared light. This light has a specific wavelength of 10,600 nanometers, which is strongly absorbed by water. This characteristic is key to its various applications, particularly in skin resurfacing and material cutting.
Here's a breakdown of how it generally works:
* Gas Mixture and Excitation:
* Inside a sealed tube or resonator, a mixture of CO2, nitrogen, and helium gas is present.
* Electrodes apply a high voltage (electrical discharge) to this gas mixture.
* This electrical energy excites the nitrogen molecules, raising them to a higher energy level.
* Energy Transfer and Laser Action:
* The excited nitrogen molecules then collide with the carbon dioxide molecules, transferring their energy to the CO2 molecules.
* These energized CO2 molecules are now in an "excited" or "metastable" state.
* The laser tube has mirrors at each end: one fully reflective and one partially reflective (the output coupler).
* As the excited CO2 molecules spontaneously return to a lower energy state, they release photons (particles of light).
* These photons bounce back and forth between the mirrors, stimulating other excited CO2 molecules to release more photons. This process, called "stimulated emission," amplifies the light.
* The photons produced are identical in wavelength, direction, phase, and polarization, resulting in a coherent and highly focused laser beam.
* Beam Formation and Delivery:
* When the light beam reaches sufficient intensity, it passes through the partially reflective mirror and exits the laser tube.
* A series of mirrors then guide the laser beam to a focusing lens.
* The focusing lens concentrates the laser beam to a very small, precise spot on the target tissue.
How CO2 Lasers are used in Skin Resurfacing
In skin resurfacing, the strong absorption of the 10,600 nm wavelength by water in the skin cells is crucial:
* Ablation: When the highly focused CO2 laser beam hits the skin, the water in the skin cells rapidly absorbs the laser energy, heating up and vaporising the targeted tissue. This process, called ablation, precisely removes thin layers of damaged skin.
* Coagulation and Collagen Stimulation: The heat generated by the laser also causes controlled thermal injury (coagulation) in the deeper layers of the skin (the dermis). This controlled heating stimulates the body's natural healing response, leading to:
* New Collagen Production: The skin produces new collagen fibres, which are essential proteins for skin structure, elasticity, and firmness.
* Skin Tightening: The heat causes existing collagen to contract, resulting in immediate skin tightening.
* Cell Regeneration: As the treated area heals, new, healthy skin cells are generated, replacing the old, damaged ones.

Fractional CO2 Laser deliver the laser energy in tiny, microscopic columns (microthermal treatment zones), leaving areas of untreated skin in between. This allows for faster healing and reduced side effects while still promoting significant collagen production and skin renewal.
In essence, the CO2 laser harnesses the unique properties of excited carbon dioxide molecules to generate a powerful, precise beam of light that, when absorbed by water, can precisely remove tissue and stimulate the body's natural regenerative processes.
