Nocatee Landing with Bill McNee (2), 20 March | Event in Ponte Vedra Beach | AllEvents About the event Nocatee Landing with Bill McNee (2)
Join us for a second fun morning walk at Nocatee Landing!

About this Event

Join Bill McNee for a fun morning walk at Nocatee Landing in search of songbirds, shorebirds, raptors and more. As you enter the gate to Nocatee Landing (just past the rear entrance to Del Webb), drive super slow with the windows down along the final 1.2 miles until you get to the parking lot next to the kayak launch – as this is very different habitat than along the Tolomato River (our ultimate destination). Keep your ears open and be on the lookout for nuthatches, warblers, woodpeckers, wrens, robins, and jays. Depending on the time of year, we might also catch some warblers, towhee’s, bluebirds, and waxwings!

We'll kick off the walk at promptly at 8am from the parking lot, walking approximately 1.3 miles along the river as well as through marshland / coastal savannah, and maritime hammocks habitats – where we’ll hopefully / likely also see (and hear) egrets, herons, wood storks, roseate spoonbills, clapper rails, kingfishers, white and brown pelicans, ibis, and various raptors. Bring your binoculars! Spotting scopes will come in handy at the start of the walk (but can be put away after we leave the kayak launch area). Bring water, bug spray and boots that can handle some potentially muddy terrain (depending on the weather). Bathroom facilities are available.

If you would like, check out the list of birds that are often seen at this time of year on eBird:

Directions: From Nocatee Parkway, head south on Crosswater Parkway about 3 miles to a roundabout. Take the eastern exit of the roundabout onto Nocatee Landing Trail. The road is paved for 0.7 miles, then just past the rear entry to Del Webb continues as a partially paved and gravel road for another 1.2 miles to the parking lot and Nocatee Landing Pavilion (address: 2015 Nocatee Landing Trail).

We encourage you to consider joining the St. Johns Regional Audubon. You can join for as little as $15/year, which can help us continue and expand our work. To join, follow this link: https://stjohnsaudubon.com/membership/

About The Host:
St. Johns County is a special place for birds. Help us celebrate and protect it!We encourage you to consider joining the SJCA. You can join for as little as $15/year, which helps us continue and expand our work. To join the SJCA, follow this link: https://stjohnsaudubon.com/membership/• We generally host a number of bird walks and field trips throughout our season for our members and the general public. However, due to the Covid pandemic, we are organizing bird walks and field trips carefully this year and putting into place new protocols to protect our participants. Participation in our walks and field trips is currently limited to 20 people or less, depending on the event. SJCA members will have a priority when there is limited space for a specific event.• Beginning birders are particularly welcome at our events! The advanced birders who lead these events enjoy helping others learn about the habitats, songs, and lives of birds and how we can protect their habitats. • We also engage in waterways cleanups on a regular basis, which is a wonderful way to be on the water and see birds (as well as help clean our waterways of debris).• We support two Christmas Bird Counts, EagleWatch, Climate Watch, and the Florida Shorebird Alliance to protect nesting shorebirds. Check out our website: www.stjohnsaudubon.com. Also "Like" us on Facebook page! We look forward to meeting you!
