Fun for the whole family! Join us for a family handbuilding workshop where we will explore the practice of kurinuki!
Kuri Nuki, meaning “carve out,” is a traditional Japanese form of handbuilding that involves shaping a solid block of clay, then carving out a vessel to create “interior space.” For some it can be a slower and more meditative way to create from clay. The finish is not supposed to be refined and smooth – the more raw and sculptural the better to demonstrate the process of making.
Choose your 90-minute workshop session: 11:00 AM-12:30 PM or 2:00-3:30 PM.
Workshop tickets are $45 per person ($35 for Pomona Residents or AMOCA Museum Members); registration includes instruction, materials, glazing and firing, and museum admission on the day of the workshop.
AMOCA’s family workshops are for all ages and everyone is welcome! Both adults and children will be given supplies to participate in the art project.
We recommend wearing clothes that can get a bit muddy, or bringing your own apron.
All participants will be provided clay and carving tools and will be able to create 1-2 pieces. We’ll fire your piece(s) in the AMOCA Studio and notify you when they’re ready for pickup, usually about 2-3 weeks after the workshop.
Please arrive 10 minutes early for a fun and relaxed check-in process. Late admission is not guaranteed.
Registration includes admission to the museum Sunday, August 31. AMOCA is open from 11 AM -4 PM on Sunday
Both adults and children will be given supplies to participate in the art project; everyone needs a ticket
