First-ever Ocean Hackathon in Congo!
Join us from October 17 to October 19, 2025 at the Renatura facility in Pointe-Noire, Congo for a 48‑hour non-stop event dedicated to marine conservation and digital innovation.
Ocean Hackathon® is a global initiative that brings together developers, designers, and ocean enthusiasts to create impactful digital solutions using marine data. Since 2016, our events have fostered international communities committed to ocean preservation through innovative technologies. This year, we’re proud to launch our first edition in Congo!
Challenges
Challenge 1: Whale Tail Identifier by Renatura
We would like to work on an app to help identify whale tails 🐋
Objective: Develop an application that uses images or sensor data to accurately identify and analyze whale tails, supporting research and conservation efforts.
Challenge 2: Innovative Ocean Conservation Awareness by Renatura
Raise awareness in an innovative way about ocean preservation (create games or apps, etc…) 🎭
Objective: Create engaging digital experiences—such as mobile apps or interactive games—that raise public awareness about ocean preservation and inspire sustainable behavior.
Challenge 3: Plastic and Net Debris Locator by IRD
Create an app to locate plastics and/or the remnants of fishing nets in the oceans.
Objective: Build an application that maps and tracks oceanic plastic pollution and discarded fishing nets, providing valuable data for cleanup operations and environmental research.
Challenge 4: Low-Cost Sensor Monitoring by IRD
Create a low-cost monitoring solution for sensors to support community-based science.
Objective: Design a cost-effective monitoring solution that integrates sensor data for community-based science projects. This tool should help researchers and citizens alike gather and analyze environmental data efficiently.

Location: Renatura, Pointe-Noire, Congo
Dates: October 17 – October 19, 2025
Format: 48-hour intensive hackathon where teams will develop prototypes using marine data, with mentorship from data providers and industry experts.

About Ocean Hackathon®
Ocean Hackathon® is a global event and community initiated by the Campus mondial de la mer. Our mission is to foster collaboration, digital innovation, and an entrepreneurial mindset to optimize the use of marine and maritime data. Projects from the hackathon often advance to the International Grand Finale in Brest, France, where winners receive prizes sponsored by our Ocean Hackathon® Ambassadors.
