Hamlet: The Greatest Play Ever?

Why is Hamlet often touted as Shakespeare’s greatest play and perhaps the greatest play ever written in the English language? Furthermore, doesn’t it seem odd that Hamlet’s “To be or not to be” soliloquy, a contemplation on suicide, is at the center of the Western literary canon? Finally, how are the questions Hamlet raises about identity and surveillance relevant to our culture today? We will explore these, and other timeless questions raised by the bard.
