- **Event Description**: What is a national park? According to author Wallace Stegner, “National parks are the best idea we ever had.  Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst.”  Today’s parks preserve our landscape, history, culture, and natural resources. They also serve as laboratories, classrooms, playgrounds, and touch stones for controversy. This course will examine the creation of the park system, the types of parks, and their role today. Along the way we’ll talk about history, science, art, literature, recreation, and challenges confronting the parks.  We’ll also spend time on the logistics of park travel so bring your vacation ideas!
