A sun salutation is richly symbolic. In many cultures the meaning and symbolism of light is both mythical and wonderful. Light speaks of warmth, truth, self-awareness, inner hope -life-and many other things. As humans living on this beautiful Earth, our primary source of light and life is the sun (Surya). For thousands of years the Sun has been seen as the source of all, both physical and spiritual, acting as a path to Divinity. Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) is a symbolic way of honouring the light that burns to give us life. Surya means light and Namas means ‘to adore’ or ‘to bow’. Kar means ‘the act of adoration’.
So in a nutshell….Surya Namaskar can mean….Yogic movement is adoration and worship of life-giving light.
Each asana in the flow targets a specific muscle group and nerve centres (chakra). Doing both all at once in a sun salutation sequence brings balance to the body, strengthens and lengthens groups of muscles, allows the heart a healthy beat to get good blood and oxygen flowing through your entire body.
Each movement of the sun salutation brings more and more balance to your left and right brain, balancing your emotions and increasing endorphins (they make you feel great).
